The term back links refers to incoming links to a web page or to a web site. Originally these were the means of navigating the web and then the emergence of search engines shifted the navigation priorities to search engine optimization or SEO. The number of back links a web site has indicates how popular the web site is.

Back links are viewed by the search engines such as Google to be votes of confidence or importance from one web page about another web page. The more back links a site has, the more votes the search engine considers the site to be receiving. So the more popular that the search engine thinks your site is the higher on their rankings you will be placed. A web site owner or seo expert can employ many different techniques to increase the overall number of back links to a web site.

Some of these methods are easy and free to use, others like link baiting can require you to do a good deal of planning and marketing to make the links work. Different back links are awarded different amounts of authority from the search engines. You want your back links to come from authority sites on the supporting topic.
